Our Big Year of 2014 flew by and was a soaring success. I want to tweet-out a big thank you to Sherry for hatching the idea and everyone who hopped, waddled or just winged it to participate.
Some of you perched on the side lines but we won't peck on you for that.
Here are the top 10 stats of "Our Big Year":
10: We set a new record for birding since this was our First Annual Big Year (don't you just love statistics).
9: 270 official bird sightings...I'm sure the unreported sightings were much higher.
8: 142 different species identified.
7: Sightings were reported from 10 different states and 2 countries (thanks to Mary Jo and family).
6: Snacks were consumed in almost 100% of all bird outings.
5: While birding is a wildly exciting activity in itself...a large number of birds were reported while
traveling to a winery (Mom-Nancy-Sherry) and shopping (Mom-Nancy-Sherry) and eating lunch out (Mom-Nancy-Sherry) and sitting in the living room eating snacks (Dad).
4: The most friendly place to bird and friendliest birder goes to Cody for his bird feeding selfie.
3: The most dangerous place to bird is a tie between the previous mentioned Cody for going outside of ski boundaries (hiked-access only terrain - see avalanche) to feed the birds and Cindy and myself for our trip to Orlando Wet Lands Park and birding among a couple dozen alligators. Now if we combined alligators in an avalanche while birding we might just have a hit reality show here.
2: While we have only one last "bird" name in the family...Crane...Peltier and Rosser sound a lot like birds especially if you do a lot of birding at wineries.
1: The number 1 stat of all is this family is easily entertained and knows how to have fun. That calls for some ice cream.
